Anilao
ANILAO, BATANGAS, PHILIPPINES
“ANILAO” is a small barangay in Mabini, Batangas, Philippines that served as the jump-off point of divers to the various dive sites scattered along the coastline of Mabini & Tingloy in the early 80’s when the roads to the other barangays were not yet operational. This barangay used to be a small barrio and got its name from the towering Anilao tree that stood prominently in the northwestern boundary of Mabini and Bauan.
Although it is a misnomer, “Anilao” is still the term popularly used by divers when referring collectively to the municipalities of Mabini & Tingloy, which boasts of world class dive sites. Anilao is regarded as the birthplace of Philippine diving. It is often called the “nudibranch capital of the world” and is excellent for underwater macro photography. What’s best about Anilao is that diving maybe done year round and is only two hours away from Manila via the SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) and the STAR tollway.
